![]() Jasper had to skim through a good portion of the journal before he reached the timeline of when the keeper first set foot on the island, in which they detailed the same instructions Hershel had given him and how serene the lighthouse was at sunset. Then again, Jasper was almost certain Hershel didn’t actually work for the same company, rather he was just hired out to take employees back and forth on their journey with a once a month supply drop. Probably wouldn’t do very well for business if Hershel spent the entire boat ride trying to scare the new hire with more chilling stories about his place of work, after all. No small talk, no nonsense, and Jasper was happy to have someone who wasn’t looking to fill the silence with grand tales of nothingness. Captain Hershel, he introduced himself as, and nothing more. ![]() Signs of rough aging cut deep into his features if the gray of his impressive beard didn’t give away his fading youth. The captain of the dingy boat he was escorted on a majority of the way, and later rowed the remaining distance to the lighthouse shore, was a quiet, gruff man. Jasper arrived early for his departure from the docks and was set up in his temporary living quarters for the next four months by that afternoon. Why did he think they were trying to entice the working man with a high wage and no need for talents? Why did he think the position was always open to be filled before any of the previous contracts were up? Why did he think everyone here avoided that occupation like the plague in favor of being fishermen or butchers or shopkeepers? A part of Jasper felt guilty upon seeing his father so distraught over his well being, entirely convinced he’d never see his only son again if he took this job. He tried to tell of two keepers who had escaped the island long before their contract was up, both of them racked with madness to this day, one of them going on about the ungodly horrors of a creature it encountered while the other refused to speak ever again in fear of being found and spirited away. Please check back soon.Jasper didn’t bother sticking around much longer to listen to his father’s frantic recollection of former keepers who had gone abroad and never returned, completely vanishing without a trace in a matter of weeks.
